Selecting Equipment for baking a cake

Are you ready to bake cakes? If you've never baked a cake, you will want to make sure you have the right equipment. Baking equipment probably isn't in your kitchen if you aren't in the habit of baking, you will need to seek out specialized cake baking tools.

One thing you'll certainly need is mixing bowls, which are available in stainless steel, glass or ceramic. Whatever your own personal favorite material, all are effective. No matter how many mixing bowls you have as part of your collection of cake baking tools, it will never seem like enough. You will need many sizes, so it makes sense to try and find a set of stacking mixing bowls.

A selection of cake pans is an absolute must. Cake pans come in many varieties, and materials, ranging from simple disposable aluminum to clay bakeware. Generally speaking, the heavier the cake pans are the better quality they most likely are.

An exotic but useful choice of cake baking tools may be cake pans with non stick surfaces. Nonstick coatings will make for cake pans that easily release the cake and clean up rather simply also. You will thus be able to remove the cake from the cake pan without spoiling the top.

Removable bottoms are a recent innovation in cake pans. This makes getting the cake out of the pan a lot easier. Make sure your cake baking tools include cake pans in a variety of sizes and shapes. You will need 8 inch and 9 inch cake pans in your collection of cake baking tools, as well as an 8 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish. You may also want some specialty pans, with odd or curious or whimsical shapes, especially if you have kids.

When considering cake baking tools, measuring cups and spoons are a must-have. Measuring spoons that are flat and narrow easily slip into spice jars. A curved handle is also a plus; it will allow your measuring spoon to sit on a counter without tipping over, thus allowing you to fill the spoon and set it down.

Be sure to own at least one Pyrex measuring cup. Pyrex is special heat and microwave proof glass, and thus a very versatile addition to your cake baking tools. You will want to have more than one of these, as you will find that you often use more than one at a time.

Rolling pins, an essential among cake baking tools, range in material from traditional wooden rolling pins to sleek aluminum ones. Aluminum rolling pins, in addition to looking good, have an added advantage---they can be chilled in the refrigerator. If you cool it in the fridge 15 min before use, you'll find that it rolls even the stickiest dough very easily. Choose one that is small and thin. That way, it not only will fit in the refrigerator, it will fit in your cabinets.

Spatulas come in various sizes and are made from various materials including wood, stainless steel and plastic. Consider purchasing a giant spatula. These come in sizes up to 10x10. They're especially useful in moving around freshly rolled dough, as the dough won't tear from its own weight as it often does when you use some other method of moving it.

Other cake baking tools needed include a hand held mixer, at least two wire cake racks, and toothpicks for testing to see if your cake is done. Also make sure you have kitchen scale, parchment paper and a kitchen timer. A good set of equipment will make the time you spend baking a real pleasure. You don't need to pay top dollar, but make sure you purchase adequate quality.
