An Overview of Wusthof Knives

Since 1814, Wusthof has been one of the most respected names in knife making. Located in the "Cutlery Capital", Solingen, Germany, Wusthof produces top quality knives that are the favorites of many well-known chefs. Gordon Ramsay, James Martin, and Jamie Oliver, among others, have been known to use Wusthof knives to prepare their best meals.

An extensive, forty-step process ensures that each blade that bears the Wusthof name is of the very best quality - sharp and precise. There are many, many knives available from Wusthof. Some are marketed toward your average everyman with a cooking hobby, while others are exclusively aimed at the kitchens of the world's best restaurants.

If you want to learn more about the great knives that Wusthof has to offer, keep reading. No doubt you'll find a blade that matches your needs and budget. Some of Wustofs most modestly priced pieces belong to the Emerlware collection. These have star chef Emeril Legassi's seal of approval.

Emeril has used Wusthof knives all through his culinary career, and to this day on his show, Emeril Live! Emeril worked with Wusthof to build this knife set. Each piece is equipped with an ergonomic handle designed for maximum comfort. They are slip-resistant to prevent kitchen accidents and have a beautiful pebble grain finish.

The blades themselves are created from a steel alloy that is stain resistant and long lasting. The knives come extremely sharp out of the box and are easily sharpened. Wusthof knives rarely come cheap, but the Emerilware collection should be within most people's price range.

Despite their lower price, make no mistake - these are Wusthof quality knives and will uphold that repuation. Each knife in the set costs about $20 purchased individually, while a full set of 18 pieces can be found for $150. For a similar price, you can find knives from the Silverpoint collection, which was the basis for many pieces of the Emerilware set.

If you're willing and able to spend a little more money, consider the Wusthof Le Cordon Bleu set. With a seamless triple-riveted handle that features the trident logo, these knives are designed to be extremely light and very well balanced. This means less fatigue when performing long, repetitive cutting tasks, and overall more comfortable, precise feel.

For an added bonus, these knives are some of the sharpest the Wusthof makes, as they're precision forged. At about $50 for each knife bought separately, the Wustof Le Cordon Bleu isn't cheap, but is affordable for those with a love for the culinary. Full sets of 14 can be acquired for around $400.

These knives are all full tang, which indicates that the metal that holds the blade in place is as long as the handle. Thanks to this design, these knives are extra durable. For other knives in this price range, you can try the Wusthof Gourmet set or the Grand Prix collections,

Knives in the Wustof Le Cordon Blue collection run about $50 each individually, while you can acquire a 14 piece set for $400. These knives are a great investment - they are all full tang knives, meaning that the metal that anchors the blade to the handle goes all the way into the handle, which makes the blade very stable and sturdy

Other knives in this price range include the Gourmet and Grand Prix collections, which feature an alternate handle design. For the buyer for who wants quality at any cost, some of the most outstanding knives in the Wusthof catalog belong to the Ikon collection. Sharing the triple-riveted handle design of the Le Cordon Bleu set, the handles of these knives are built of a wood called Grenadill, also known as Moazambique Ebony.

This wood is extraordinarily strong and gives the knives a beautiful look and unique feel. Precision forged blades give Ikon knives amazing sharpness that's been laser tested to ensure quality. With full tangs, most of Ikon collection should last a long, long time.

High quality means a high price tag; so expect to pay a fair amount for Ikon knives. $100 individually, you can secure a set of these excellent cutting tools for around $1,400. These blades clearly aren't meant for the casual cook.

For some alternatives in the same price range, you can try the Ikon classic with black or white handles, or the Culinar set, which features a sleek pure stainless steel design. Don't bother with those cheap knives that don't last a week. When you're ready to upgrade your cutlery, go for quality - go for Wusthof.
